Is Samsung Secure Folder safe?

Why would I use a vault app instead of Secure Folder?

None of them about strength. It needs a Samsung account, it does not leave Samsung, and it is visibly there, so it protects against discovery but not against being asked.

Does Secure Folder transfer to a new phone?

Not reliably, and not at all to a non-Samsung phone. Contents are tied to the device and to Knox. Move everything out of Secure Folder before the transfer and before any factory reset. A vault app whose backup is a single encrypted file avoids the problem, because the file moves to any phone that can run the app.

Secure Folder is the strongest thing built into Android

Not a folder. A second Android profile in a Knox container, with its own storage and its own lock.

The isolation is hardware-enforced. On strength alone, Secure Folder wins.

Three reasons people still look elsewhere

It needs a Samsung account: Setup requires one, and the reset path for a forgotten Secure Folder lock runs through it. An account that can restore access is an account that is in the loop.
It does not leave Samsung: Contents are tied to Knox on that device. Moving to a Pixel or iPhone means moving everything out by hand first, and tripped Knox on a modified device can make the data unrecoverable.
Everyone can see it is there: An icon in the app drawer and an entry in Settings. Asked what it is, you either open it or you refuse. It was never designed to be concealed.

One UI 8.5 adds a Private Album to Samsung Gallery. It does not change the account requirement or the portability problem.

Inside Secure Folder, open Gallery or My Files, select everything, and use Move out of Secure Folder.

Check the count in the normal gallery. Moving out is the step people assume worked.

Bring them into the new app, then delete the unprotected copies, including the recently deleted bin.
